Cleanup exercise starts today in Kumasi ahead of Asantehemaa’s funeral, climaxes on Saturday

The cleaning of the metropolis, desilting of gutters and other drains, collecting of waste etc ahead of the funeral ceremony of the Asnatehemaa, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem 11 commences today.

This was disclosed by the Medical, Sanitation and Environment sub-committee in charge of the laying in state and burial rites of the late queen mother.

The committee which comprises heads of the Red Cross society, the Waste Management Department, the Metro-Health Directorate and the Ambulance Services made the announcement at a press conference on Wednesday, January 11, 2017.

Director of the Waste-Management Department at the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, John Gorkeh Miah says they have been charged to ensure that Kumasi is clean  devoid of waste in the streets, to make sure that Kumasi is ready in preparation for the “big funeral.”

He said “the assembly has put in a lot of measures which I have already briefed the Maawerehene who is the chairman of this sub committee.”

To ensure efficiency in their work, Mr. Gorkeh Miah disclosed that the assembly has gone into forming task forces within the various sub metros to deal with situation at the sub metro level.

“We’ve also charged all the Environment Health Officers to intensify their house to house inspection and prosecution they should see the nuisance arrest those perpetrating it and then put them before court.” He added.

Today’s clean up exercise will be done by students within the metropolis and is expected to begin from airport roundabout, through the arterial roads through the Manhyia palace.

This will continue tomorrow Friday, January 13 and then “Saturday [January 14, 2017] we will have the grand cleanup exercise where we encouraging and advising everybody who resides in the metropolis to actively participate in the cleanup exercise because it is going to be the last exercise to usher in the funeral on Monday [16th January, 2017].

He however said they have teams on standby that will continue to clean areas that people continue to litter but was quick to add that his outfit will also arrest and prosecute persons who litter indiscriminately.
