The Deputy Minister of Agric in charge of crops, Dr. Alhassan Yakubu on Daybreak Kapital has on Tuesday admonished Ghanaians to desist from referring to farmers as poor.

According to him, the farmers need a better tag rather than poverty which he opined was a wrong tag to them.

Farmers in the country mostly are referred to as very poor though in a very vital business. They are said to find it very difficult living a comfortable life- a situation many think government could be of help by way of assisting them to gain more profit in their line of business.

According to Dr. Yakubu, “we always qualify our farmers with poverty. Meanwhile, we don’t refer to our doctors, teachers, Lawyers and other professions as such. It is not fair. ”

He indicated that the farmers do not want to be referred to as poor but rather professionals “who put food on our tables”.

According to him, if government was going for a loan for the construction of Sofoline interchange for instance, it will be leveraged on the money coming from the farmer in Ghana.

He therefore saw it as a disrespect to refer to farmers as poor since they are of a great importance to the country.
